The Debate
From 1844 the city of Carcassonne's
fortifications and old cathedral were the
object of one of the most ambitious restoration programmes of the XIXth Century. The project, under the direction of Eugène Viollet-le-Duc, saved the
fortress from being abandoned and left in ruins, and restored it to the appearance the royal engineers had given it in the XIIIth Century.
