BOUNDARIES AND TERRITORIES
|
|
The city of Carcassonne and the Saint-Louis Bastide. 1462 pen-and-ink, gouache.

Today the city is the symbolic centre of Carcassonne. Its silhouette is the emblem for the wholetown.
Its walls, which are visible from just about anywhere, are a highly prized panorama.
The Lower Town begins on the other side of the river. The Old Bridge was, for a long time, the boundary between the two rival communities. Not so long ago, funeral processions still stopped there when someone who had died on one side of the river was to buried on the other side. The priest handed the coffin into the care of the priest from the other side and returned immediately to his parish.
