The Cathedral

he City of Carcassonne dates back to an ancient protohistoric oppidum which was romanized from the Ist Century B.C. Its Late Empire inner wall was partly reconstructed by the royal engineers at the end of the XIIIth Century. The ancient Cathedral of Saint-Nazaire and Saint-Celse, the castle and the outer wall, which doubled Carcassonne's defences when it became a royal seneschalsy, are an exceptional example of the art of building between the XIth and XIVth Centuries.
