EUGENE VIOLLET-LE-DUC : ARCHITECTURE AND THE IMAGINARY
Viollet-le-Duc was at first commissioned to restore the Saint-Nazaire Basilica in the city in 1844 , then, in 1850 to renovate the entire citadel. He was to manage the site till his death in 1879. During the first ten years the work essentially consisted of reinforcing the existing structures. The restoration work that was to bear the stamp of Viollet-le-Duc was to start around 1860. Basing himself on meticulous observation of all the vestiges, he produced numerous sketches and plates and undertook to reconstruct the fortress to be an ideal example of the XIIIth Century.
